Bret Michaels Settles Court Case After 2009 Tony Awards Injury

Rock musician Bret Michaels has reached a settlement with organizers of the Tony Awards and CBS after filing a lawsuit regarding the 2009 Tony Awards, according to The Associated Press. During the 2009 ceremony while Michaels performed the Poison song “Nothin’ But a Good Time” with the cast of Broadway’s Rock of Ages, he was injured by a large backdrop that hit him on the head as he exited the stage.

According to Michaels, Tony Award producers didn’t warn him there would be a set change, including a large moving piece of scenery descending the stage, during his exit. Additionally, the rock musician blamed CBS for airing the incident, which later became an internet viral video.

Michaels received medical treatment for a split lip and a broken nose, but according to the lawsuit, the rocker also suffered from brain bleeding after the blow. In April 2010, Michaels was hospitalized when doctors discovered a brain hemorrhage. Michaels then suffered a stroke which almost killed him, according to the lawsuit. The injuries purportedly affected Michaels’ ability to perform future shows.

The terms of the settlement will not be released, but representatives from the Tony Awards and CBS released a joint statement that both parties have reached an “amicable resolution.”
